Job Opportunities Beyond Tourism

Job Opportunities Beyond Tourism

Mallorca is the Germans' favourite island. Year after year, millions of holidaymakers flock to the Balearic island to relax amid sand, sun and sea and to enjoy the Mediterranean way of life. The constant stream of tourists makes the autonomous Balearic Islands one of Spain's economically strongest regions, with relatively low unemployment and a huge choice of tourism-related jobs and sidelines. Whether as a waiter in a chic gourmet restaurant, a concierge in a five-star hotel or a tour guide for one of the island's many tourism companies, the range of different jobs in the tourism industry is almost endless, and a knowledge of Spanish often plays only a minor role. In Arenal you mainly meet a German crowd, while in Magaluf a good command of English is enough to find work in the party district favoured by British holidaymakers.

Software Companies Are Backing Mallorca

In recent years, the island's international outlook and good infrastructure have contributed significantly to industries beyond tourism relocating to Mallorca, or choosing the Balearic island as a base for their business idea and company. Software firms such as 1&1 have chosen Palma as the location for their new inbound call centre. Microsoft is also represented on Mallorca, with an office in the technology park near the university.

Following changes in the job structure on campus, the UIB (University of the Balearic Islands) is also creating more and more jobs and making room for the hands-on realisation of academic material and innovative start-up ideas.
