What to look out for when hiring a road bike on Mallorca

  • Carbon or aluminium: For a couple of easy rides, an aluminium road bike from around €15 per day is plenty. If you’re planning a training camp or long stages in the Tramuntana, go for a carbon model – the difference in comfort and weight really tells once you’re covering more than 100 km a day.
  • Check the groupset: Mechanical groupsets (Shimano 105, SRAM Rival) are cheaper; electronic Di2 or eTap shifting comes on the top models at many rental shops – the listing usually names the exact model.
  • Bring your own pedals and shoes: Almost every rental shop will fit your pedals free of charge at handover – it’s best to state your pedal system when you book. Most also keep standard clipless pedals (Shimano SPD/SPD-SL, sometimes Look) in stock on site.
  • Reserve your frame size early: In high season (March to May and September to October), common sizes between 54 and 58 are often gone weeks in advance. Book online ahead of time and give your height – the bike is then set up for you at handover.
  • Compare insurance and deposit: Some providers offer all-inclusive prices with insurance and no deposit, while with others both cost extra or aren’t offered at all. Always compare the final price – the price transparency boxes on the profiles show you what’s really included in the rental.

The island’s best road cycling regions

  • Sa Calobra / Serra de Tramuntana: The classic – 9.4 km and around 670 m of climbing with 26 hairpins up to the Coll dels Reis, reachable in the north from Alcúdia, Playa de Muro or Port de Pollença. Want more? Add on Puig Major and Sóller.
  • Cap Formentor: From Port de Pollença it’s around 40 km there and back with about 800 m of climbing to the lighthouse – the ultimate scenic ride. From Alcúdia it becomes roughly 60 km with 1,100 m of climbing.
  • The flat south and east: From the Playa de Palma via Llucmajor to Campos and Ses Salines, you roll along quiet country roads through Es Pla – ideal for warming up and building base miles, with the Puig de Randa (around a 5 km climb) as a test for the legs along the way.
  • The south-west: From Paguera or Santa Ponsa, the loops run via Es Capdellà and Galilea to Andratx and Sant Elm – short, punchy climbs and little traffic away from the coast road.

Yes, this is standard practice on Mallorca: bring your pedals and shoes, and fitting at handover is free almost everywhere. It’s best to state your pedal system when you book – the bike will then be ready and set up for you.
Do I need to book my road bike in advance?
In high season (March to May and September to October) you definitely should: common frame sizes and top models are often booked out weeks ahead. In summer and winter you can usually get a bike at short notice too – but the choice is always greater online than on the spot in the shop.
Is insurance included in the rental price?
This is the biggest difference between providers: some offer all-inclusive prices with insurance, bike fitting and no deposit, while with others insurance costs extra or theft and damage are entirely down to you. Do the rental shops deliver the road bike to your hotel?
