What to look out for when hiring an e-bike

  • Match the battery range to your ride: For the beach promenade and rides around town, any battery will do. If you’re planning routes with plenty of climbing – towards the Tramuntana, say – ask in advance about the battery capacity in watt-hours and whether a charger for the hotel is included. Rule of thumb: with a high assistance level and hills, you’ll get considerably less range than the manufacturer promises, so it’s best to plan conservatively.
  • City bike, sport e-bike or e-MTB: An upright city e-bike with a rack is the right choice for the promenade and shopping, a sporty trekking or sport e-bike for longer tarmac rides, and an e-mountain bike for gravel tracks and the mountains. Some providers also rent out specialist bikes such as folding e-bikes or e-fatbikes – for example Funbikes Mallorca in Illetas.
  • Compare insurance and deposit: With some rental shops insurance is already included in the price and there’s no deposit, while others charge for both separately.   • Bay of Alcúdia: From Alcúdia along the Playa de Muro to Can Picafort and back – around 30 km, virtually no climbing, much of it on cycle paths right beside the bay. Perfect for city e-bikes, families and your first day on the bike.
  • Cap Formentor: The panoramic classic in the north: from Port de Pollença you rack up around 800 m of climbing over roughly 40 km on the way to the lighthouse and back. With motor assistance you can manage the route even without racing legs – start with a full battery and switch the assistance off on the descents to save range.
  • Sóller and the orange valley: From Palma over the hairpins of the Coll de Sóller to Sóller and down to the Port de Sóller – around 60 km there and back with roughly 900 m of climbing. The old pass is pleasantly quiet, as the car traffic runs through the tunnel. If you’d prefer something shorter, start right in Sóller and explore the valley.
