Mallorca's Cycling Community Celebrates Its Annual Gala: A Festival of Sport, Culture and Community
Last Friday evening, in the picturesque setting of the Binicomprat restaurant in Algaida, a significant chapter was written in Balearic cycling. The Gala del ciclismo 2023, an event that rounds off the season with glamour and sparkle, drew nearly four hundred enthusiasts, including senior figures and passionate cyclists.
A showcase of the island's culture and sport
The gala, an emblem of the interweaving of sport, culture and tourism in the Balearics, was attended by prominent figures such as the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Jaume Bauzà, and the Vice-President of the Consell de Mallorca, Pedro Bestard. Their presence underlined the role of cycling as an essential part of Mallorcan life and culture.
Honouring success and passion
The evening began with an inspiring speech by Toni Bauzà, President of the Balearic Cycling Federation. He highlighted that the number of cycling licences had exceeded the 3,000 mark for the first time in the past season – a clear sign of the steady growth and increasing popularity of cycling on the islands.
A diversity of disciplines and talents
The awards ceremony was a kaleidoscope of the talent and diversity that characterise cycling in the Balearics. From the Supercopa Mallorca to the Challenge Illes Balears Veloviajes, every category reflected the enthusiasm and dedication that cyclists bring to their discipline. Special recognition went to athletes such as Lucía Gómez and Nicolau Alemany in mountain biking and cyclo-cross; Joan Sansó in para-cycling; and outstanding track cyclists such as Julia Nurphy and the Bennàssar brothers.
International recognition and pride
The international successes of Maria Mora and Albert Torres showed that Mallorca's cycling talents shine not only locally but also on the world stage. These accolades are testament to the quality of the training and facilities available in the Balearics.
The Xavier Bonnín Award: more than just sport
With the presentation of the Xavier Bonnín Award to Sebastià Roser, the importance of human values in sport was highlighted. Roser's contribution to promoting cycling in the Son Ferriol district of Palma is a shining example of sport's power to bring communities together and strengthen them.
Closing and looking ahead
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the gold badge of the Federació de Ciclisme de les Illes Balears to Fernando Gilet, whose career and commitment to the sport were honoured. This award symbolises recognition of those who have dedicated themselves to cycling and its development.
Mallorca: a cycling paradise
While the gala marked the end of the season, it also stands for a new beginning. Mallorca, with its picturesque scenery, challenging routes and a thriving cycling culture, remains a magnet for cyclists from all over the world. The island is not only a training paradise for professionals but also a place where amateurs and cycling enthusiasts can experience the joy of riding in one of Europe's most beautiful settings.
A sustainable look to the future
In closing, the Gala del ciclismo 2023 leaves the cycling community with a sense of anticipation and pride. It not only reflects the achievements of the past year but also looks ahead to a future in which cycling will continue to play a central role in promoting health, sustainability and community in the Balearics.
