Mallorca Airport Car Park Raises Its Prices

Palma de Mallorca airport car park puts up its prices

Free parking at Son Sant Joan airport in Palma de Mallorca is now a thing of the past: using the airport car park has recently started costing money from the very first minute. Gone are the days when an airport visitor could park their car free of charge for the first half-hour. AENA, the operator of Palma airport, is raising the per-minute rate from 2.5 cents to 2.6 cents a minute, and now from the very first minute – previously the first thirty minutes of parking were free.

Free parking at Palma airport is history

Motorists searching for a space have had to put up with worsening conditions at Palma airport for several years now. After the drop-off area along the road in front of the arrivals hall was scrapped, queues formed on the hard shoulder just before the car park entrance, and heated arguments between drivers and police became an everyday occurrence. With the now extensive monitoring of the spaces in front of the departures area, the free parking options at Palma airport have been drastically reduced – drivers are forced to use the paid facilities or else risk hefty fines. The parking options include the multi-storey car park with VIP and long-stay spaces, as well as the short-stay car park by the side exit of the arrivals hall. In addition, Park&Fly and Airport Parking Mallorca are two private providers offering parking in the immediate vicinity of the airport. Besides the increase in parking charges, AENA also plans to introduce a one-euro luggage-trolley fee for 2013, which it puts down to the high costs of maintaining and servicing the trolleys.
