Whereas there were just under 18,000 hire bikes on the island in 2013, an increase of almost 40% is expected for 2014 — a total of 32,000 hire bikes. The number of mountain bikes in particular is likely to have risen sharply. Even though the largest following certainly belongs to the road-cycling fraternity, more and more mountain bikers are developing a taste for the island. Ever more private land is being opened up to mountain bikes. So you can — and definitely should — compare the various hire companies on the island, and above all keep a close eye on the conditions.
